As bad as it is for our planet, our wallets are getting hit hard as the price of cat litter skyrockets. Here at Desert Pearl Rescue Network, we found that our litter budget nearly
matched our cat food budget.
So, we did a little research to see if anyone had thought of something else. Apparantly, there are several different types of litter now, made from corn, pine and shavings, all at high prices. But, we found a few ways around the problem.
FELINE PINE has been a popular alternative due to the light way. The litter starts as pellets, then breaks down into sawdust as the box is used. The biggest problem was THE PRICE!
A little digging gave us another alternative -- WOOD PELLETS FROM THE HARDWARE STORE. The pellets are designed to be used in wood burning stoves and have not been treated with any dangerous kennels. With a 7 lb bag of Feline Pine about equal in price to 20lb bag of wood pellets, it sounds like a great idea to try.
After careful consideration, we thought, if horses use special bedding, could cats use it as well. So, off we go and get a big bag of horse bedding, fine shavings. For $5.49
for one bag, it was worth the try. It only took the cats a couple of days to get used to it and all is going well. We don't have any more dust floating everywhere. The box has a fresh scent of pine. What we did notice is that the cats do track it around. Honestly, they did the same things with the scoopable litter as well. The shavings are a bit more noticeable, clean up easier and overall, we think it is a great, cost effective way to solve the feline elimination problem.
We are curious to know what you use, what you have tried and what works best for you. Please let us know what you use for your cat's litterboxes.
